With historical games I think the time period and geographical location will play a big role in how much you enjoy it, based on your own personal preferences and interests. That said, Atilla does give you climate change and religious unrest as mechanics of social upheaval which adds a lot of immersion by steering your play-through towards plausible outcomes and decisions. Perhaps this is the result of the narrow geographical focus but the style, art, and audio is just excellent in my opinion. Is immersion important to you? This is subjective of course, I do think that ToB did a superb job of setting ambiance for the campaign. How much challenge do you want? Atilla is considered among the most difficult and ToB among the easiest. What do think of siege battles? ToB has significantly improved this aspect of the game with more siege map variety, and less walled settlements to reduce tedious sieges against trivial garrisons that a lot of people just auto resolved anyway. Is unit/faction variety important to you? There is more in Atilla but ToB has some interesting faction mechanics to add some flavor.ĭo you play much with mods? New games will take a while to get large overhauls, where Atilla will have Ancient Empires coming out at the end of this month which will give you basically Rome 2.5 TW. ToB really only has building from the ground up. What kind of PC do you have? ToB runs much smoother than Atilla.ĭo you like building a kingdom/empire from the ground up, or trying to salvage a stagnant and/or dying empire and survive? Atilla has both but the Romans which are frequently a popular faction are more about surviving (at the start anyway). Think we missed one?
